Vol. 558 No. 1

Written Answers. - Voter Registration.

Richard Bruton

Question:

448 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will review the system of voter registration in order that people who have made application for registration will be automatically contacted regarding inclusion on a supplementary register when a poll is called and that more time will be provided for getting on the supplementary register after an election is called. [23277/02]

Rule 15(2) of the Second Schedule to the Electoral Act, 1992, provides that a registration authority shall, as soon as practicable, consider and rule on an application to be entered in the supplement to the register of electors and shall notify the applicant of the ruling. The time between the making of a polling day order and polling day is short having regard to the many administrative and organisational matters to be arranged by returning officers and registration authorities. In these circumstances it is not proposed to change the period for the receipt of applications for entry in the supplement before polling day.
