Vol. 558 No. 1

Written Answers. - Urban Renewal Schemes.

David Stanton

Question:

467 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the designated areas under the various urban renewal type schemes; the progress in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23610/02]

My Department currently sponsors three tax incentive based schemes: the urban and town renewal schemes and a living over the shop scheme. Designations under the schemes were notified to relevant local authorities and information on the various sites designated for tax incentives are available from them.

The urban renewal scheme commenced in March 1999 in the five major cities and in 38 large towns. The termination date for the scheme has been extended to end 2004. Significant progress has been made since the scheme commenced and the total investment figure over the life of the scheme is estimated at €3 billion.

The town renewal scheme commenced in July 2000 in 100 smaller towns and is due to expire at the end of 2003. The living over the shop (LOTS) scheme commenced in April 2001 and is operating in designated streets in the five major cities and is due to expire in 2004. Progress under both schemes has been slower than anticipated. My Department has requested local authorities to intensify their efforts in promoting the benefits of the schemes at local level. I am confident that with a pro-active approach by local authorities to implementing and promoting the schemes, significant progress can be achieved within the time period available.

While monitoring data on the schemes is submitted to my Department periodically, information in relation to any specific area may more appropriately be sought from the local authorities concerned who have statutory responsibility for monitoring the schemes.
