Vol. 558 No. 3

Written Answers. - Salmon Management Report.

Martin Ferris

Question:

140 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources his Department's plans with regard to the results of the national survey of licensed salmon fishermen by the international consultancy INDECON on behalf of the Central Fisheries Board; the action he intends to take on foot of the survey results; if the information gathered from the survey will not be used to remove licenses from current license holders without adequate compensation; and if a move towards removing licenses will be on a strictly voluntary basis. [24144/02]

I have been advised by the Central Fisheries Board that it has engaged consultants to undertake a study of the economic and socio economic value of salmon in Ireland. The survey mentioned by the Deputy is part of the research process being undertaken by the consultants and is intended to inform the consultants in framing their findings and recommendations to the Central Fisheries Board. I will consider the report when I receive it from the board along with its advice in the matter. I have received no proposals to remove licences from current licence holders to date.
