Vol. 558 No. 3

Written Answers. - Strategic Planning Guidelines.

Ciarán Cuffe

Question:

180 Mr. Cuffe asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he has satisfied himself with the current rate of progress in implementing the strategic planning guidelines for the greater Dublin area. [24076/02]

The strategic planning guidelines for the greater Dublin area, which were published on 25 March 1999, are intended to provide a long-term strategic planning framework for the development of the greater Dublin area. The guidelines were addressed to the local authorities in the greater Dublin area and to the Dublin and mid-east regional authorities. The Planning and Development Act, 2000, provides that these guidelines are now deemed to be regional planning guidelines as provided for in that Act. Under the provisions of the 2000 Act, the implementation of the guidelines is primarily a matter for the two relevant regional authorities and the seven relevant planning authorities which must have regard to the guidelines when making and adopting development plans.

The imminent publication of the national spatial strategy will provide a context and structure for the review of the strategic planning guidelines. I would expect that work on this review would be commenced by the regional authorities as soon as possible following the publication of the national spatial strategy.
