Vol. 558 No. 3

Written Answers. - Private Rented Accommodation.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

44 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the basis on which it has been determined that home renting is better for the consumer than home ownership; the research carried out to substantiate the theory whereby first-time home seekers' interests are best served by renting accommodation, which in some cases costs twice as much as a mortgage for the same property; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24030/02]

I am not aware that it has been determined that renting accommodation is better for the consumer than home ownership. The stated aim of the Government's housing policy is to enable every household to have an affordable dwelling of good quality, suited to its needs, in a good environment, and, as far as possible, at the tenure of its choice.
