Vol. 558 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Tony Gregory

Question:

280 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education and Science the steps which are being taken to resolve the industrial dispute involving education welfare officers which has denied their services which are urgently required by disadvantaged schools; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25150/02]

There is no industrial dispute involving the former school attendance officers. These officers transferred to the National Educational Welfare Board and are now staff of the board, in accordance with the provisions of the Education (Welfare) Act, 2000.

Discussions between the management and union sides in relation to the terms and conditions of the officers as educational welfare officers in this new service, under the board, have been under way for some time. Recent talks have also involved the services of the Labour Relations Commission. Contact between the parties is ongoing and it is hoped that the matters at issue can be resolved in the near future.
