Vol. 558 No. 5

Written Answers. - Roads Projects.

Arthur Morgan

Question:

318 Mr. Morgan asked the Minister for Transport if his attention has been drawn to the proposal in the NESC report titled, An Investment in Quality: Services, Inclusion and Enterprise, that recommends that the plans for road building be re-examined to see whether all of the planned projects are essential; if he will be acting on the NESC recommendation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25154/02]

The NESC report referred to by the Deputy made a number of recommendations regarding infrastructure investment programmes, including the recommendation in relation to the national roads programme which is the subject of this question.

All major road projects are reassessed periodically by the NRA as projects develop and move towards construction. The need for further strengthening of these and related arrangements will be considered in the context of the Fitzpatrick Associates report Evaluation of Investment in the Road Network, which the NESC report referred to and the upcoming mid-term review of the operational programme on economic and social infrastructure.
