As the Deputy will be aware, my Department decided to examine post-primary provision in the New Ross area with a view to possible rationalisation. This decision was taken in light of capital grant applications received from all five post-primary schools in the centre, including the CBS. It was also decided to extend the scope of this examination to include the five primary schools in the area.
In view of the extent of this examination, it was decided to appoint a facilitator, Dr. Tom McCarthy, to consult with the local providers with a view to identifying the key issues in relation to primary and post-primary school provision in the area. Dr. McCarthy's report has now been received and is currently under examination in the planning and building unit of my Department. It is intended to decide how best to respond to the issues identified in the light of available resources and the competing demands of other schools.
In the interim, the planning and building unit of my Department is addressing any health and safety issues at New Ross CBS and is currently awaiting details of the works involved and the estimated cost of same from the school authorities. Upon receipt of this information the matter will receive further attention.
