Vol. 559 No. 1

Written Answers. - Disabled Drivers.

Mary Wallace

Question:

179 Ms M. Wallace asked the Minister for Finance if he has received correspondence from a person (details supplied) in County Meath regarding the proposed changes to the Disabled Drivers (Tax Concessions) Regulations, 1994; and if he will give consideration to persons without the use of one arm in proposals to change this regulation. [25943/02]

I have received correspondence from the person concerned regarding the proposed changes to the disabled drivers' and disabled passengers' (tax concessions) scheme.

It is a requirement for admission to the scheme that the applicant meets the medical criteria specified in the regulations. These criteria relate essentially to conditions that affect the physical mobility of the person concerned. In accordance with these regulations, the loss of the use of one arm would not in itself qualify a person for the relief.

I have received the report of the interdepartmental review group on the disabled drivers and disabled passengers scheme. The report is currently under consideration by officials in my Department. Any recommendations in this report, whether to change the medical criteria to include disabilities I mentioned or otherwise, will receive full consideration.
