Vol. 559 No. 1

Written Answers. - Casino Development.

Seán Haughey

Question:

191 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Finance the plans the Office of Public Works has to renovate and improve the casino at Marino and surrounding areas; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25653/02]

On 23 August the Office of Public Works applied, on behalf of Dúchas, the Department of the Environment and Local Government, to Dublin City Council for permission for development at the casino grounds, Malahide Road, Dublin 3. The proposed development provides for the removal of two existing staff huts to be replaced with a new single storey detached pavilion consisting of a security office, guide office, accessible toilet and storage area, a new approach pathway, new parking layout for 30 cars and a bicycle stand, two security poles seven metres high with security cameras attached, new landscaping layout, new fencing layout and all ancillary works.

On 16 October Dublin City Council sought further information from the Office of Public Works. It requested an historical assessment of the casino grounds taking account of the effect that the Office of Public Works's proposal may have on any possible re-instatement of its former landscape setting. The effect on the archaeological potential of the site was also to be taken into account. In addition, it requested that Office of Public Works consult jointly with the planning department and conversation office of DCC prior to lodging this historical landscape assessment.

On 6 November representatives of the Office of Public Works and Dúchas met the planning department, conservation office and parks manager of DCC to establish exact requirements. The planning department must get back to Office of Public Works regarding its request for additional information.
