Vol. 559 No. 1

Written Answers. - Ex-Gratia Payments.

Bernard Allen

Question:

296 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will reconsider a decision made by him to allow only £2,431.62 as an ex-gratia gratuity to a person (details supplied) in County Cork; and if a substantial increase can be given to this person for their work for the health services. [25364/02]

Under the terms of the ex-gratia retirement benefits scheme for non-pensionable staff in voluntary hospitals all part-time non-pensionable employees with at least five years service, qualify for a gratuity calculated at one week's pay for each year of service up to 15 years and two weeks' pay for each subsequent year subject to a maximum of 78 weeks' pay. The amount referred to by the Deputy relates to an estimate prepared on the basis of information furnished by the employer prior to the individual's retirement.

Further details concerning the individual in question have been requested from the employer and when these details are supplied to my Department a final figure will be calculated under the terms of the scheme as detailed above.
