Vol. 559 No. 1

Written Answers. - Airport Landing Charges.

Aengus Ó Snodaigh

Question:

370 Aengus Ó Snodaigh asked the Minister for Transport if foreign military aircraft landing here pay landing charges or fees; if so, the rate; and the amount of income this has generated to the Exchequer every year for the past 10 years. [25842/02]

The determination of airport charges in relation to the three State airports is a matter for the Commission for Aviation Regulation which acts on an independent statutory basis as provided for under the Aviation Regulation Act, 2001. The manner in which Aer Rianta levies airport charges at the three State airports is a matter for the company subject to compliance with the commission's determination. I have no function in these matters.

The revenues generated through airport charges at the State airports do not accrue to the Exchequer. Such charges are levied by and accrue to Aer Rianta which has a statutory responsibility to operate on a fully commercial basis.
The company informs me that, apart from one historical agreement relating to aircraft of the Canadian Air Force that involved a 20% discount on standard landing charges which is being phased out, foreign military aircraft using the State airports pay the appropriate airport charges to Aer Rianta.
