Vol. 559 No. 1

Written Answers. - Drugs Task Forces.

Seán Crowe

Question:

438 Mr. Crowe asked the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs the funding which is made available to organisations and groups which provide support to the families affected by substance users and misusers; the organisations to which such funding is made; the amount each of those organisations is in receipt of; the criteria for receiving such funding; the number of people assisted by these groups; and the amount provided to the SWAN Family Support Organisation in Springfield, Tallaght in its valuable work dealing with the families of addicts and abusers. [25389/02]

As the Deputy will be aware, my Department has responsibility for overseeing the work of the local drugs task forces, LDTFs, which are based in 14 areas of high drug misuse in Dublin including Tallaght, Cork and Bray.

The LDTFs are made up of representatives from the statutory, community and voluntary sectors and each area develops a local action plan. The selection of projects is based on the task force's prioritisation of the identified needs within its area and the ability of the proposed projects to meet those needs. Most of the LDTFs are currently implementing their second round plans and, to date, more than €14 million has been allocated to implement these plans. In this context, all of the LDTFs have recognised the need for family support projects and included such projects within their plans.

It is not possible to distinguish with certainty the total allocations made to family support actions in the LDTF plans as some projects adopt a multi-faceted approach and include a number of elements. However, I am in a position to provide the Deputy with a list of the projects identified by the national drug strategy team as being family support-oriented. The list is attached herewith. The number of people assisted by these groups is not available.

Finally, the group referred to by the Deputy was allocated funding of €19,046 under the Tallaght plan.
