Vol. 559 No. 1

Written Answers. - Credit Union Regulation.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

111 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to concerns expressed by the Irish League of Credit Unions regarding the possible impact of the proposed new single financial regulatory authority on the ethos and special character of credit unions; if he has had a request for a meeting from the league; if he has met or intends to meet the league to discuss its concerns; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25555/02]

I can confirm that my attention has been drawn to the concerns of the Irish League of Credit Unions.

The league first wrote to me on 7 November 2002 requesting a meeting. I arranged for officials from my Department to meet the ILCU on 11 November 2002. At this meeting the league outlined their concerns and subsequently these were brought to my attention. This meeting followed prior contacts between the ILCU and the interim Irish Financial Services Regulatory Authority.

The league wrote to me on 15 November requesting another meeting and I have agreed to meet with them. The meeting is scheduled to take place next Monday, 16 December 2002.
