Vol. 559 No. 2

Written Answers. - Grain Imports.

Willie Penrose

Question:

55 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he has satisfied himself with the controls in place to monitor the origin and content of grain imports; if recent allegations regarding the danger of grain imports from the Ukraine have been drawn to his attention; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25753/02]

Grain, like other feed material is sampled and tested on a random basis for nutrient composition and the presence of undesirable substances in line with requirements under EU and national legislation. Where specific risks are established additional inspections, testing and-or certification is required. Recently a consignment of grain from Russia was tested for radiation at the request of the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland and was found not to have elevated levels.
