Question:

81 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if the report on the dairy industry being prepared by a consultancy firm (details supplied) has been completed; the steps he proposes to take on foot of this report; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25749/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 71 and 81 together.

In May 2002, I commissioned a study of the dairy processing sector, in conjunction with Enterprise Ireland and the industry. The overall aim of the study is to contribute to a coherent strategic development plan for the sector and make recommendations on actions to improve efficiency and long-term competitiveness. The study will focus on examining the existing structure of the dairy processing industry, the market opportunities for dairy products and the product options to exploit these opportunities. The study is expected to be completed in January 2003.
