Vol. 559 No. 2

Written Answers. - Animal Health.

Dan Boyle

Question:

75 Mr. Boyle asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the effect on farming in the Askeaton area of a phenomenon which has caused a high incidence of sick and dying animals. [25952/02]

The reported animal health and disease problems of the early to mid-1990s in the Askeaton area were the subject of a multi-agency investigation under the auspices of the Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, in which my Department participated.

This was a most comprehensive and in-depth exercise, based on scientific evidence, in the course of which specialist expertise from various quarters was brought to bear on an analysis of animal health, human health and environmental issues in the Askeaton area. It culminated in the report published in August 2001 by the EPA. In so far as the possible causes of animal health difficulties experienced in the Askeaton area in the past are concerned, I believe that this report speaks for itself.
