Vol. 559 No. 2

Written Answers. - Meat and Bonemeal.

Enda Kenny

Question:

96 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the tonnage of meat and bonemeal stored, countrywide by county; and the cost of this storage. [25691/02]

There are 241,748 tonnes of meat and bonemeal, MBM, stored in nine counties as follows:

County

Tonnes of MBM

Cork

4,625

Wexford

58,342

Kilkenny

20,510

Waterford

18,260

County

Tonnes of MBM

Dublin

23,316

Louth

41,911

Meath

64,515

Carlow

10,269

Total

241,748

Out of that, a total of 155,713 tonnes have been produced under the Exchequer-funded rendering subsidy scheme and this gives rise to an annual storage charge of €2.07 million. A further 39,384 tonnes relates to the EU purchase for destruction and special purchase schemes which gives rise to an annual storage charge of €0.93 million. The balance of the MBM stock is privately owned and is the responsibility of the rendering industry.
Under a new arrangement, the rendering industry is now responsible for the complete process, from rendering right through to destruction of the MBM. A build up of MBM stock under the ownership of the state has been arrested and storage charges arise only in relation to existing stocks, which will decline over time. Contracts are ongoing to dispose of 72,000 tonnes of this material over the next four months.
