Vol. 559 No. 5

Written Answers. - Tax Collection.

John McGuinness

Question:

147 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Finance if the Revenue Commissioners will consider the medical circumstances relating to the case of a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny when considering their demand for interest on late payment of a tax liability; and if the exceptional circumstances of the case can be examined with a view to waiving the penalty charges. [26778/02]

I am advised by the Revenue Commissioners that an interest charge of €1342.90 has arisen in respect of the individual in question because of the late payment of income tax for the year 1999-2000. Both the tax liability, based on the return submitted, and interest due for the year in question were referred to the revenue sheriff for collection because of the person's failure to make payment despite being requested to do so. The Revenue Commissioners have advised me that the tax has been paid but interest amounting to €1342.90 is still outstanding together with sheriff's fees. The Revenue Commissioners have not been provided with any information on, or evidence of, the medical circumstances referred to by the Deputy. Details of any such difficulties should be supplied without delay to the Revenue Commissioners. A hold has been placed on the collection of the amount outstanding until 13 January 2003, to provide an opportunity to the individual in question to supply the details referred to. The matter will then be reconsidered.
