Vol. 559 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Absenteeism.

Finian McGrath

Question:

196 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will urgently intervene to assist Larkin College, Dublin 1, with regard to an issue (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26406/02]

The National Educational Welfare Board is the single national body with responsibility for school attendance matters. It is an independent statutory body established under the Education (Welfare) Act, 2000, to implement the provisions of the Act. The former school attendance officers have transferred to the board and are now staff of the board in accordance with the provisions of the Act. Discussions between the management and union sides on the terms and conditions of the officers as educational welfare officers in the new service, under the board, have been under way for some time. Recent talks have also involved the services of the Labour Relations Commission. Contact between the parties is ongoing and it is hoped the matters at issue can be resolved in the near future.
