213 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding a school building project for a school (details supplied) in County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26467/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 210, 212 and 213 together.

Architectural planning has not commenced for major building projects at the schools referred to by the Deputy. In view of the extensive nature of the building programme, my Department has no plans at present to initiate architectural planning for any further major building projects for the foreseeable future.

In the meantime, the schools should use their devolved grant to deal with any urgent health and safety matters.

Question:

211 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding a school building project for a school (details supplied) in County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26465/02]

Architectural planning for a major building project at the school in question is at an advanced stage.

I will be announcing my Department's expenditure proposals for primary buildings in January. In the meantime it is not possible to say when individual projects will progress to tender and construction.

Questions Nos. 212 and 213 answered with Question No. 210.

Question:

214 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding a proposed extension to St. Farnan's post-primary school, Prosperous, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26468/02]

The stage three submission, developed sketch scheme, for the extension project at St. Farnan's post-primary school, Prosperous has been approved within the Department.

The question of allowing this project to proceed to stage four, detail design, will be considered in the light of the available capital for 2003, current commitments and competing demands.

Olivia Mitchell

Question:

215 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will bring forward the promised decision on the 2003 construction of a national primary school for the developing Stepaside area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26469/02]

As the Deputy has previously been informed, a need has been identified by my Department for additional primary school provision in the Stepaside area. A formal notification of intention to apply for the recognition of a school in Stepaside, to commence operation in September 2003, has been recently received from the Dublin Archdiocese.

This notification process is part of a revised, comprehensive procedure I am putting in place to consider applications for the recognition of new primary schools seeking official recognition from 2003 onwards. As part of this procedure, such applications will be referred for consideration and advice to the recently established new schools advisory committee. Notification of my decision on each application will be made on or before 30 April next, allowing adequate time for the recruitment of teaching staff and the enrolment process.

The property management section of the Office of Public Works, which acts on behalf of my Department in relation to site acquisitions generally, has been requested to explore the possibility of acquiring a site for the proposed new school in the Stepaside area. As soon as a report is received the matter will be given further consideration.
