Vol. 559 No. 5

Written Answers. - Health Services.

James Breen

Question:

290 Mr. J. Breen asked the Minister for Health and Children if funding will be provided for a dementia unit at the day care centre in Clarecastle, Ennis, County Clare. [26609/02]

Responsibility for the provision of services in County Clare rests with the Mid-Western Health Board. I am advised by the board that Clarecastle Day Centre Limited has proposed to build a day centre adjoining the existing centre specifically for Alzheimer's sufferers. The MWHB has recently commissioned a strategic review of its existing services for the elderly mentally infirm, organic and functional, with a view to developing a strategy for service provision and a six year action plan. The strategy review is currently being examined by the board. The provision of services for people with dementia in the MWHB region formed part of the strategy review. My Department will consider any proposals for the development of dementia services in the board's area in due course in the light of available resources.
