Vol. 559 No. 5

Written Answers. - Aids and Appliances.

Denis Naughten

Question:

304 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will provide additional funding to the WHB for aids and appliances for children in line with a notice of motion (details supplied). [26772/02]

Since 1998 a total of just under €31 million has been provided to the Eastern Regional Health Authority and the health boards for the provision of technical aids and appliances to people with physical and sensory disabilities. The Western Health Board received more than €3.3 million of this funding. Arising from savings made in 2002 my Department has recently provided an additional €50,000 to the WHB specifically for the provision of aids and appliances to children with physical and sensory disabilities. This figure brings the total allocated for aids and appliances to the WHB in 2002 to just over €0.8 million.

In 2003 a figure of €1.463 million in additional funding has been identified for the WHB in respect of services for people with physical and sensory disabilities. Included in this figure is a sum of just under €1 million to be used for priority service pressures as identified by the board. It is at the discretion of the health board to decide as to how much of this funding should be directed towards aids and appliances having regard to other service pressures in the region.
