Question:344 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the date for the publication of legislation to establish a Garda inspectorate; and when he expects the inspectorate to begin its work. [26352/02]

The legislation which is necessary to introduce new inspection arrangements for the Garda Síochána and new procedures for dealing with complaints against the Garda by the public is currently being prepared. As indicated in the Government legislation programme – autumn session 2002 – which was published by the Government chief whip on 7 October 2002, it is expected that the Bill will be published in 2003. It is hoped that its enactment by the Oireachtas will follow as soon as possible following publication.
