Vol. 559 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Joe Costello

Question:

350 Mr. Costello asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of gardaí allocated to police anti-war protesters at Shannon and Dublin airports respectively on 8 December 2002; the number of protesters present; the stations from which gardaí were drafted in; the cost of policing each of the protests; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26545/02]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that a total of 82 gardaí – all ranks – were allocated to police the anti-war protest at Shannon Airport on 8 December 2002. I am also informed that there were approximately 300 protesters present and that gardaí were drafted in from the Clare, Limerick and Roscommon divisions. The Garda air support unit and Garda dog unit were also present. The cost of policing the protest was €29,211. I am further informed that there was no anti-war protest at Dublin Airport on 8 December 2002.
