Vol. 559 No. 5

Written Answers. - Closed Circuit Television Systems.

Jan O'Sullivan

Question:

357 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when closed cir cuit television cameras will be installed in Limerick city centre; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26730/02]

Limerick is one of 17 locations set to receive new Garda CCTV systems over the next two years – subject to the availability of funds. The other locations are, in alphabetical order: Athlone, Ballyfermot, Bray, Carlow, Castlebar, Clondalkin, Clonmel, Dundalk, Dún Laoghaire, Ennis, Finglas, Galway, Kilkenny, Sligo, Tallaght and Waterford.

Contracts have been placed in relation to the CCTV systems for Bray, Dundalk, Dún Laoghaire, Finglas, Galway and Limerick. Work is currently ongoing in each of these locations and it is intended that the installation of cameras will commence on completion of the planning process with the relevant local authorities and the refurbishment of rooms in the different Garda stations to accommodate the CCTV monitoring rooms and associated equipment.

Preparation of the detailed technical specification documents by the Garda authorities for the CCTV systems in Athlone, Clondalkin, Tallaght and Waterford is well advanced and should go to tender early in the new year. Planning for the installation of the CCTV systems in the remaining seven areas is scheduled to commence in 2003.
In relation to Limerick, I am advised by the Garda authorities that the necessary refurbishment work on a room in Henry Street Garda Station to accommodate the CCTV monitoring suite and associated equipment is almost complete. I am also advised that camera sites have been selected and the provision of the required civil works and ESB supplies are progressing. Wayleave issues are also being processed. My Department is also in consultation with Limerick City Council about the planning process for the CCTV system.
While the timescale for completion of the CCTV scheme is difficult to clearly define at this stage, it is envisaged that the system will be operational during the first half of 2003.
