Vol. 559 No. 5

Written Answers. - Local Authority Housing.

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin

Question:

380 Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government when he will meet with a delegation from Monaghan Town Council regarding a request he received following an October 2002 meeting of the local authority and sought to address the inadequacies of financial proposals offered to tenant purchasers and home owners in the Mullaghmatt Council Housing Estate. [26655/02]

Mullaghmatt estate has been designated for funding under my Department's remedial works scheme. I understand that tenders have been received for the pilot phase of the scheme involving the refurbishment of 29 houses of which six are tenant purchased houses.

It is a condition of the remedial works scheme applicable to all local authority areas that tenant purchasers or other private owners of houses in a remedial works project should generally contribute 50% of the cost of the works to their houses.

The nature and extent of works which can properly be assisted in the Mullaghmatt scheme in respect of the tenant purchased houses is currently being assessed in relation to this condition.

It is not proposed to alter the scheme in relation to contributions from tenant purchasers and this position is being communicated to Monaghan Town Council.
