Vol. 559 No. 5

Written Answers. - Cross-Border Travel.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

95 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will examine a case (details supplied); and the cross-Border co-operation which exists to avoid such heavy-handed treatment of citizens when travelling north of the Border. [23763/02]

The British-Irish Intergovernmental Conference was established under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement. The conference, and its joint secretariat, which comprised officials from the two Governments, promotes bilateral co-operation on all matters of mutual interest within the competence of both Governments. The agreement provides that, in addition to facilitating co-operation in security matters, the conference will address the areas of rights, justice, prisons and policing in Northern Ireland and will intensify co-operation between the two Governments on the all-island or cross-Border aspects of these matters. As such it provides a forum in which we can raise matters of concern with the British Government. I have, therefore, asked that the case to which the Deputy refers be raised with the British side of the joint secretariat. I will contact the Deputy directly as soon as my Department is in receipt of more detail and information about this case.
