257 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Finance the details of each property which has been acquired or leased by the State for the dispersal of asylum seekers; when agreements were signed in respect of each location; the amount of finance involved in the property purchased or leased in respect of each location; the progress which has been made in respect of the implementation of this work in respect of each property; the likely timescale necessary to implement a programme of work in each case; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The Reception and Integration Agency of the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform is responsible for the accommodation of asylum seekers. The Commissioners of Public Works acting on behalf of the agency have acquired-constructed the following centres of accommodation:

In addition to above, sites were developed and mobile homes installed in 2000 at Ballymullen Barracks, Tralee, Kildare town and Athlone and these are also currently occupied by asylum seekers. A system-built accommodation centre has been completed at Knockalisheen just outside Limerick city which is also currently occupied.
The total expenditure on construction, maintenance, fit-out, repair, etc., on accommodation for asylum seekers over the last three years is: 2000, €15,489,202; 2001, €17,926,442; 2002, €7,058,209.
The number of asylum seekers in accommodation at any of the above centres is a matter for the Reception and Integration Agency of the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform who also have a number of commercial contracts in place for direct provision of accommodation and board for asylum seekers.
