Vol. 560 No. 1

Written Answers. - Research Funding.

Pat Carey

Question:

326 Mr. Carey asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will make a statement on correspondence (details supplied) in relation to the research programme of the Higher Education Authority and on the implications for the new Research Councils of the 2003 budgetary situation. [27117/02]

The overall provision for research under the Education Vote has increased from an outturn of €44,138,000 in 2002 to €48,870,000 in 2003, an increase of almost 11%. Against a background of stringent overall control of public expenditure increases for the coming year, this increase reflects my commitment to maintaining the progress being made to engender the requisite skills in third level to develop a knowledge-based society.

The costs of the scheme administered by IRCSET will be met from this overall provision, along with other current research costs associated with programmes administered by the Higher Education Authority, the institutes of technology, the Irish Research Council for Humanities and Social Sciences and HEAnet. As part of the process of determining the allocations for 2003, officials of my Department have met with a number of these agencies, including the Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology.

My Department is finalising the allocations to the various bodies at present and it is expected that these will issue in the near future.

Question No. 327 answered with Question No. 325.
