Vol. 560 No. 1

Written Answers. - State Examinations.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

424 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education and Science if Chinese is the third most commonly spoken language here; and if he will take steps to have it included as a subject for examination in the leaving certificate. [1599/03]

I am aware that the number of Chinese nationals resident in Ireland has increased in recent years, but I am not aware that Chinese is now the third most commonly spoken language in Ireland. The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment is engaging in a process which will lead to the development of a national policy for the teaching of languages. A preparatory discussion paper has been commissioned by the NCCA and is expected to be ready by April 2003. The discussion paper will facilitate subsequent consultation with the partners in education. No further languages will be added to the list of subjects for examination at leaving certificate level until that work has been completed.

Question No. 425 answered with Question No. 400.
