Question:

524 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education and Science the status of the national primary school planned to serve the Stepaside area in the Sandyford parish [2026/03]

As the Deputy is aware, a need has been identified by my Department for additional primary school provision in the Stepaside area. A formal notification of intention to apply for the recognition of a school in the Glenbourne-Ballyogan area, to commence operation in September 2003 has been received from the Dublin archdiocese. This notification has been referred for consideration to the new schools advisory committee, which I established recently to provide independent advice regarding the recognition of new primary schools. The committee is at present undertaking a consultation process with the current school providers and the general public in the area in which it is proposed to locate the new school.

A formal application for recognition of the school must be submitted not later than 31 January 2003. Assuming an application is received, the new schools advisory committee will consider the matter and make a recommendation to me on recognition. It is my intention to notify each applicant of my decision in their case by 30 April 2003.

With regard to accommodation for the new school, the position is that the provision of interim accommodation is the responsibility of the patron. A school does not become eligible for capital funding until such time as it demonstrates viability and secures permanent recognition. In the event that permanent recognition is granted, interim accommodation will remain the patron's responsibility until the Department is in a position to provide permanent accommodation. While the property management section of the Office of Public Works, which acts on behalf of my Department in relation to site acquisitions generally, has identified a possible site for the proposed new school, it was not possible to make provision for the purchase of the site in the con text of the 2003 capital programme. The question of site purchase will be considered again in the context of the 2004 programme.
