Vol. 560 No. 1

Written Answers. - Irish-Foreign Student Ratio.

Paul Nicholas Gogarty

Question:

555 Mr. Gogarty asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources the ratio of foreign to Irish students at Media Lab Europe; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1641/03]

At Media Lab Europe, 50% of the senior research staff are Irish. At junior researcher-student levels, the current ratios are approximately 30% Irish, 40% rest of Europe, 30% rest of world.

These figures do not include the many students and researchers from Irish universities who carry out research at Media Lab Europe on a part-time basis, either on Media Lab Europe's undergraduate research opportunities programme or under joint collaborative research projects.

Part of the uniqueness of the Media Lab model of research is the bringing together of researchers from different disciplines, backgrounds, nationalities and cultures. As its name suggests, in Media Lab Europe's case this is achieved primarily by attracting researchers from across Europe, along with researchers from the US and elsewhere reflecting the MIT relationship. Over 80% of the management, administration and support team at MLE are Irish.
