Vol. 560 No. 1

Written Answers. - Catchment Management Plans.

Eamon Ryan

Question:

559 Mr. Eamon Ryan asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources the legislation which covers the setting up and operation of catchment management plans; the extra legislation he foresees with the introduction of river basin management, as required under the Water Framework Directive; and the progress being made on this matter. [1951/03]

Section 11 of the Fisheries Act 1980, as amended by section 8 of the Fisheries (Amendment) Act 1999, provides that a regional fisheries board shall encourage, promote, organise and co-ordinate the voluntary development of inland fisheries catchment management plans in its fisheries region. No requirement for additional fisheries legislation has been identified to date in the context of river basin management under the Water Framework Directive, the implementation of which is being co-ordinated by the Department of the Environment and Local Government.
