Vol. 560 No. 1

Written Answers. - Consultant Appointments.

Michael Noonan

Question:

623 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for Health and Children when a full-time consultant neurologist will be appointed to the Limerick Regional Hospital; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1119/03]

I understand that the Mid-Western Health Board has a long established link with the neurosciences centre at University College Hospital, Cork, for the provision of neurological services on a sessional basis.

From a national perspective, I have asked Comhairle na nOspidéal to initiate a review of neurology services which will focus on updating its 1991 report into neurology services, taking into account: various papers published since the 1991 Comhairle review on the development of neurology services; recent advances in the provision of services; and an increasing demand for a structured approach to post-operative care and rehabilitation.

I understand that the work of the committee is well advanced and that a report is currently being drafted. The Comhairle review will inform considerations on the development of neurology services nationally, including the Mid-Western Health Board.
