Vol. 560 No. 1

Written Answers. - Health Board Reorganisation.

Charlie O'Connor

Question:

686 Mr. O'Connor asked the Minister for Health and Children the position regarding the reorganisation of the health boards catering for the general Dublin area; if his attention has been drawn to the view that future structures should include membership which is accountable to the public and not merely the vested interests; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1548/03]

Prospectus Strategy Consultants were contracted in June 2002 to complete an audit of structures and functions of the health system. The terms of reference included consideration of the structures and functions of both health boards/authority and other specialist, advisory, regulatory and executive agencies under my aegis. The terms of reference also require prospectus to make recommendations to improve corporate governance arrangements in the health system. The project is being overseen by a steering group. The steering group has not yet received a final draft of the report. On completion, I will bring the report to the Government for decision. I can advise the Deputy that work is at an advanced stage and I anticipate that a final draft will be available shortly.
