Vol. 560 No. 1

Written Answers. - General Practitioner Service.

Richard Bruton

Question:

724 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will consider introducing a scheme whereby the cost of doctors' visits for children was capped at a certain amount by the introduction of a refund scheme along the same lines as the scheme for refund of payments in respect of medicines, as an interim measure pending the further extension of medical card cover that has been promised; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1870/03]

Consultation fees charged by general practitioners in respect of visits by children who are not medical card holders are a matter of private contract between the doctor as the service provider and the child's parent(s) or guardian(s) as the purchaser of the service. I have no plans to introduce a publicly funded co-payment scheme for doctors' fees for any category of private patient.
