Vol. 560 No. 1

Written Answers. - Dublin Port Tunnel.

Finian McGrath

Question:

756 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for Transport if he will halt the work on the Dublin Port tunnel until safety is guaranteed; if the cause of the subsidence on the Dublin to Belfast railway line at the Dublin Port tunnel site in Fairview will be investigated; and if the offers of compensation to the 315 families directly affected by the tunnel will be increased. [27135/02]

The design and construction of the Dublin Port tunnel national road project is a matter for the National Roads Authority, NRA, in co-operation with relevant local authority.

The national development plan sets out a strategic framework for the development of national roads and provides for investment of €6.75 billion in national road improvements over the period 2000-2006, including the N1 Dublin Port tunnel.

Under the Roads Act 1993, the NRA has overall responsibility for the planning and supervision of works for the construction and maintenance of national roads. It is a matter for the NRA, within the NDP framework, to promote the detailed programming of the work required and to manage, in co-operation with local authorities, the planning, design and implementation of individual road development projects.
