Vol. 560 No. 1

Written Answers. - Closed Circuit Television Systems.

Paul Kehoe

Question:

809 Mr. Kehoe asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the provision which is being made to prevent the increase in vandalism in Wexford town and other town centres; if closed circuit television is being considered; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1117/03]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the personnel strength of the Wexford-Wicklow Garda division as of 31 December 2002 was 310. This represents an increase of 41 or 15% since 31 December 1997. I am further informed that the gardaí in Wexford are currently deploying uniformed members on public order patrols during the hours of darkness, particularly at weekends. Plainclothes gardaí are also deployed, which has resulted in the arrest of seven people for acts of vandalism in the town centre.

The situation is being kept under review by the Garda authorities and when additional Garda personnel next become available, the needs of the division will be fully considered within the context of the overall needs of Garda divisions throughout the country. I am informed that the Garda CCTV advisory committee has not to date received an application from Wexford. The local gardaí are, however, consulting with the local authority on the matter. If an application is received, it will be processed in the normal manner and the committee will make recommendations on completion of its deliberations.
