Vol. 560 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Seán Crowe

Question:

838 Mr. Crowe asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the ongoing difficulties being experienced by the Garda authorities in mainly urban areas who have received stolen vehicles and so-called company cars and have no suitable storage areas; the steps he proposes to take to overcome this anomaly, especially as some stations have now no room for Garda vehicles; and if discussions have been held with South Dublin City Council with a view to establishing such a compound for recovered vehicles in the area. [1571/03]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that, at present, vehicles seized by Garda are retained at respective Garda stations, space permitting. The amount of space currently available at each location for this purpose is limited. In the Dublin metropolitan region, there is a dedicated car compound available at the Talbot complex in Santry. A car compound is provided at new divisional/district Headquarters that are being built, provided that there is sufficient physical space on the site. No discussions have taken place between the housing section in Garda headquarters and south Dublin city council in this regard.
