Vol. 560 No. 1

Written Answers. - Local Authority Funding.

John Bruton

Question:

914 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will allocate additional funds to Meath County Council to allow it to set up a parks department which is urgently required in view of the rapidly expanding population in the county; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1388/03]

The establishment and resourcing of particular departments within a local authority are matters for the authority itself.

In 2003 an amount of €17,792,093 in general purpose funding has been allocated to Meath County Council from the Local Government Fund. General purpose grants from the fund are additional to grants for specific purposes and supplement authorities' income from local sources such as commercial rates. It is a matter for the authorities to decide how these general purpose grants should be spent.

Question No. 915 answered with Question No. 873.
