Vol. 560 No. 1

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Pádraic McCormack

Question:

924 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the position regarding local authorities taking in charge group water schemes in areas; if there has been a directive issued to local authorities advising them that they should discontinue taking in charge group water schemes; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1597/03]

The taking in charge of group water schemes by local authorities is an integral element of the rural water programme which it is not proposed to alter. In submitting funding applications to my Department for 2003 block grant allocations under the RWP, local authorities were advised that attention should be focused on, and priority given to, improvement works to group water schemes serving 50 persons or more that are not in compliance with the Drinking Water Regulations 2000.
