Question:

991 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Social and Family Affairs the number of persons employed within her Department to deal with public relations matters; the names, titles and costs for 2002 of these persons; and the other managers or advisors she has employed outside of her Department, giving details of their name, title and costs for 2002. [1349/03]

There are four staff in the Department's press office, including a press adviser appointed by me. The three departmental officers assigned to the press office include one higher executive officer, one executive officer and one staff officer. During 2002, the salary costs, including employer's PRSI, of the three departmental officers totalled €122,205.89.

I have appointed on a contract basis for my term of office a press adviser, Mr. Tom Reddy, since 31 July 2002. During 2002, the total cost including salary, pension contribution and employer's PRSI of this position amounted to €33,633.38.

When I took up office, I retained the services of the special adviser appointed by my prede cessor, Deputy Dermot Ahern. Mr. Mel Cousins is employed on a contract basis for my term of office. During 2002, the total cost, including salary, pension contribution and employers PRSI of this position amounted to €93,252.87.
