Vol. 560 No. 1

Written Answers. - Insurance Costs.

Ciarán Cuffe

Question:

162 Mr. Cuffe asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources if his attention has been drawn to the difficulties that arise from the fact that forestry contractors are increasingly unable to use chainsaws in their work due to insurance restrictions; and his Department's proposals to ensure that cover does become available. [27064/02]

I am aware of the difficulties facing forestry contractors in relation to insurance cover. I understand that representatives of the forestry sector met recently with officials from the insurance industry to discuss the insurance needs of the sector and that further meetings are scheduled. I am hopeful that the forestry representatives can negotiate suitable insurance cover for the contractors. I should point out that employer and public liability insurance cover is available to a limited number of members of the Irish Forestry Contractors Association through a group insurance scheme. Contractors working for Coillte can avail of insurance cover through another group scheme.
