The European Communities (Natural Habitat) Regulations 1997 provide for amendment-modification of candidate Special Areas of Conservation, cSAC, both in response to objections and following surveillance of sites by authorised officers of my Department.
The Appeals Advisory Board assists in the assessment of objections from landowners by carrying out a further review of cases not initially recommended for acceptance by my Department and making an independent recommendation to the Minister for the Environment and Local Government. In all cases, boundary changes to provide for exclusions or inclusions must be justified on scientific grounds.
The following table gives details of the cSAC site name, cSAC site code and location by county of the cSAC, in each case where amendments in response to objections to SACs have been made, but without reference to the Appeals Advisory Board. It should be noted that these amendments involve additions to, as well as exclusions from, cSACs and that most involve very small areas of land, often within quite large SACs.
