Vol. 560 No. 3

Written Answers. - Legislative Programme.

Enda Kenny

Question:

445 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs his legislative priorities for the remainder of the current Dáil; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2422/03]

The enactment of the Official Languages (Equality) Bill 2002 is the main legislative priority of my Department at present. This Bill has been published and has completed Second Stage in the Seanad. Discussions are continuing with the office of the Attorney General regarding a number of amendments. Views are also being sought from that office in relation to a number of points which have been raised in submissions on the Bill including submissions from Comhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge and Foras na Gaeilge. I anticipate that these issues will be clarified in the near future, thus enabling the Bill proceed to Committee Stage in the Seanad.

My Department now has responsibility for charity law and related fundraising matters. Proposals for legislative reform in relation to charities and charitable fundraising will be brought forward as soon as possible following completion of a public consultation process. Other legislation will be proposed as the need arises.
