Vol. 560 No. 3

Written Answers. - Job Protection.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

187 Mr. Gilmore asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if the employment of 300 information technology workers at the Bank of Ireland centre, Cabinteely, County Dublin, whose jobs are at risk following the bank's decision to outsource IT services, will be protected; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [2357/03]

I have been informed that Bank of Ireland is investigating the possibility of outsourcing certain of its information technology, IT, functions. However, there is no threat to permanent jobs in Bank of Ireland.

The bank has also informed me that its plans for the future of its IT operations have been discussed in detail with the relevant employees and that process is still ongoing. The staff concerned were previously employed in an outside joint venture but they reverted to direct employment in the Bank of Ireland Group when the joint venture was terminated.

I understand that there may be a further joint venture or outsourcing arrangement entered into, but I have been informed that, in such an eventuality, jobs and terms of employment would be fully protected.
