Vol. 560 No. 4

Written Answers. - Rail Services.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

264 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Transport when the need for additional track capacity to ensure the Enterprise has a central line in a three track system on the northern suburban line will be put in place. [2968/03]

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

266 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Transport when he expects to see the conclusion of the upgrading of the western commuter rail services; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3003/03]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 264 and 266 together.

My position with regard to future investment in the railways is that it should be guided by the findings and recommendations of the strategic rail review. As I have said before the primary purpose of commissioning the review was to provide the Government with a basis for establishing a strategic policy framework for development of rail over the next 20 years.

I recently received the report from the consultants who carried out the work and I propose bringing it before my Government colleagues for their consideration shortly. It would be inappropriate for me to comment on particular rail development issues in advance of the Government having an opportunity to consider the review.
