Vol. 560 No. 4

Written Answers. - Air Safety.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

145 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Transport if his attention has been drawn to the opposition among aeromedical and scientific experts to the Simpson proposals on flight time limitations for pilots. [2766/03]

The Simpson Proposals are, I understand, recent proposals emanating from the European Parliament in relation to flight time limitations for pilots. Aeromedical and scientific experts are due to meet the European Commission on 19 February 2003, during which they will outline their observations on these proposals. The Irish Aviation Authority, which is responsible for the safety of Irish aviation, is currently examining those proposals, and will take part in that meeting. The exact nature of the experts' views on these proposals will become clear after that meeting.

The day to day oversight of aviation safety falls within the responsibility of the Irish Aviation Authority. In so far as this proposal may lead to legislative changes, I assure that Deputy that I always give the highest priority to safety matters.
