Vol. 561 No. 1

Written Answers. - Flood Relief.

Seán Crowe

Question:

218 Mr. Crowe asked the Minister for Finance the number of individuals who applied for and were successful in respect of aid in view of the Government appointment of the Irish Red Cross to distribute humanitarian aid to people who suffered floods on 9, 10, 14 and 15 November 2002; and the sums involved. [3256/03]

The Irish Red Cross Society, IRCS, received 627 applications for humanitarian aid due to the flooding which occurred in November 2002. Of the applications received, 593 have been assessed to date and final cheques have issued to these applicants in the sum of €4,613,150. The remaining assessments will take place in the next week with payments being made in the next two weeks.

As the humanitarian scheme is administered on a strictly confidential basis between the society and the individual applicants, details of individual payments are not made available. However, the IRCS advises that individual payments vary according to the circumstances of each case but the average payment is approximately €8,000.
